How to start a chainsaw without a cord?

If you're a homeowner or a professional arborist, you know the importance of having a reliable chainsaw in your tool collection. Whether you need to clear fallen trees or prune overgrown branches, a chainsaw can make quick work of even the toughest jobs. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you don't have access to a power source, starting a cordless chainsaw can be a bit of a challenge. In this blog post, we'll go over some tips and tricks for starting a chainsaw without a cord.

Before we dive into the specifics, it's important to note that starting a chainsaw can be dangerous, especially if you're not familiar with the process. If you're a beginner, it's a good idea to have someone with experience show you how to properly start and operate a chainsaw. Additionally, always wear protective gear, including gloves, logo suspenders, shoulder pads, hat liner, and hearing protection, to minimise the risk of injury.

Now, let's get started.

Step 1: Check the fuel and oil levels

Before attempting to start your chainsaw, it's important to make sure that it has enough fuel and oil. Check the fuel tank to ensure that there's enough gas, and add more if necessary. Also, make sure that there's enough oil in the bar and chain oil tank. Without sufficient oil, your chainsaw can suffer from excessive wear and tear, which can lead to costly repairs down the line.

Step 2: Check the air filter

A clogged air filter can prevent your chainsaw from starting, so it's important to make sure that it's clean and free from debris. Remove the air filter cover and take out the filter. If it's dirty, gently clean it with a filter oil, soft brush, or compressed air. If the filter is too dirty to clean, it's a good idea to replace it.

Step 3: Prime the engine

To start your chainsaw, you'll need to prime the engine. This process involves adding a small amount of fuel to the carburetor to help get the engine going. To prime the engine, locate the primer bulb (usually located near the carburetor) and press it several times until you see fuel in the bulb.

Step 4: Set the choke

The choke is a mechanism that restricts the amount of air that enters the carburetor, which makes it easier to start the engine. If your chainsaw has a choke, set it to the "on" position before attempting to start the engine.

Step 5: Pull the starter cord

Now it's time to start the engine. With the choke set to "on", hold the chainsaw firmly with your left hand and use your right hand to pull the starter cord. Pull the cord quickly and firmly, but don't yank it too hard, as this can damage the starter cord or the engine. If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls, try setting the choke to the "off" position and pulling the starter cord again.

Step 6: Warm up the engine

Once the engine starts, let it run for a few minutes to warm up. This will help ensure that it's running smoothly and prevent stalling.

Step 7: Turn off the choke

After the engine has warmed up, turn off the choke by moving the lever to the "off" position. This will allow more air to enter the carburetor, which will help the engine run smoothly.

In conclusion, starting a chainsaw without a cord is definitely possible, but it requires a bit of patience and practice. By following these tips and tricks, you'll be able to start your chainsaw with confidence, even if you're working in a remote location without access to electricity. Just remember to always prioritize safety, and never hesitate to ask for help if you're unsure about anything.
